Washington: Pakistan finds itself in the crosshairs of terrorism as regions bordering Afghanistan witness a surge in extremist activities, revealed a senior Biden Administration official.
Addressing the House Foreign Affairs Committee during a Congressional hearing on Pakistani elections, Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, Donald Lu, underscored the longstanding conflict in Afghanistan, which has inevitably entangled Pakistan. Lu emphasized the need for recalibrating the relationship with Pakistan post-Afghanistan war.
“Our priority now is to assist Pakistan in combating the looming threat of terrorism. The Pakistani populace has endured the scourge of terrorism unlike any other,” Lu remarked.
The frequency of attacks, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan provinces, has escalated significantly over the past three years, with continued assaults originating from Afghan territory, Lu noted.
“Last Saturday, a major attack claimed the lives of seven policemen at the hands of the Pakistani Taliban. We urge the Afghan Taliban to prevent their territory from being used as a springboard for terrorist outfits,” Lu stressed.
In a recent incident, a Lieutenant Colonel, a Captain, and five soldiers lost their lives in multiple suicide attacks on a security check post in North Waziristan. Reacting to this, Pakistan conducted airstrikes on Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants in Afghanistan, resulting in civilian casualties.
Lu also highlighted the importance of economic stability in Pakistan, advocating for private sector-led growth beneficial to its citizens.
“We seek to bolster our longstanding partnership with Pakistan, fostering enhanced business relations and facilitating ease of travel between our nations,” Lu affirmed.
Dispelling allegations of US involvement in political interference, Lu vehemently denied conspiracies against the Imran Khan government, asserting respect for Pakistan’s sovereignty and democratic processes.
Expressing concern over the recent elections, Lu cited instances of violence against law enforcement, journalists, and political figures. Despite challenges, he acknowledged positive aspects, noting significant voter turnout and diverse representation in Pakistan’s assemblies.
