EU’s Borrell Accuses Israel of Provoking Famine in Gaza

Brussels: EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell made a bold statement on Monday, alleging that Israel is deliberately causing famine in Gaza and employing starvation as a weapon of war, a claim vehemently denied by Israel’s foreign minister.

“In Gaza, we are no longer teetering on the brink of famine; we are in a state of famine, impacting thousands of people,” Borrell declared during the opening of a conference on humanitarian aid for Gaza in Brussels. “This is unacceptable. Starvation is being used as a weapon of war. Israel is provoking famine.”

In response, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz urged Borrell to “stop attacking Israel and recognize our right to self-defense against Hamas’ crimes.”

Katz further elaborated in a post on X, stating that Israel has permitted “extensive humanitarian aid into Gaza by land, air, and sea for anyone willing to assist”, but this aid has been “violently disrupted” by Hamas militants, with the “collaboration” of the U.N.’s aid agency UNRWA.
