Nearly 100 million citizens are prepared to cast their votes in the upcoming Indian General Election. Tomorrow, March 16, at 3 pm, the Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to unveil the much-awaited schedule for the Lok Sabha elections during a press conference. With a total of 543 Lok Sabha seats, a minimum of 272 seats is required to secure power. Additionally, alongside the Lok Sabha elections, the ECI will disclose the dates for assembly elections in Odisha, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Andhra Pradesh.
According to sources, the Lok Sabha elections are anticipated to be conducted in seven to eight phases. The press conference will be streamed live for public access. Earlier today, former bureaucrats Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh assumed their roles after being shortlisted from a pool of six candidates. Their appointment follows the resignation of Arun Goel as the election commissioner, a move that surprised many.
Kumar and Singh succeeded Anup Chandra Pandey and Goel, with Pandey stepping down on February 14 upon reaching the age of 65. The selection of Gyanesh Kumar and Sukhbir Singh was finalized during a meeting of a three-member high-level selection panel chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
As the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the BJP, seeks a third consecutive victory in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress-led INDIA alliance is gearing up to mount a strong challenge.
