New Delhi: In a swift response to a pirate attack on a Bangladeshi-flagged vessel off the coast of Somalia, the Indian Navy successfully intervened to liberate the hostages aboard.
The targeted vessel, MV Abdullah, flying the flag of Bangladesh, was carrying coal and en route from Mozambique to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) when it fell prey to the pirates.
Indian Navy’s Mission, deploying a warship and a Long Range Maritime Patrol (LRMP), promptly reacted to the piracy threat against MV Abdullah, as reported via the Navy’s statement on the social media platform X.
“On receipt of intimation, the LRMP was immediately deployed & on locating the MV in the evening of 12 Mar 24, attempted to establish communication to ascertain status of ship’s crew members. However, no response was received from the ship,” the statement added.

Upon receiving notifications, the Indian Navy swiftly dispatched a vessel and LRMP to the location. Despite attempts to establish communication with the Bangladeshi vessel to ensure the safety of its crew, no response was received.
On the morning of Thursday, the warship assigned to Maritime Security Operations intercepted MV Abdullah, which had been hijacked. The crew, all citizens of Bangladesh, was found to be held hostage by armed pirates. The Indian Navy ensured their safety before continuing to accompany MV Abdullah until its arrival in the territorial waters of Somalia.
Earlier this month, a merchant vessel in the Gulf of Aden was hit by a missile, resulting in a fire onboard. Responding promptly, the Indian Navy rescued 21 crew members, including an Indian national, in distress.

In a separate incident, all crew members of the Indian Navy cruiser, INS Kolkata, were safely evacuated to Djibouti after the ship responded swiftly to a maritime incident.
Highlighting its commitment to maritime safety, the Indian Navy emphasized its continuous efforts in ensuring the security of ships and sailors traversing through the region.
