Putin Affirms Russia’s Preparedness for Nuclear War, Yet Cautions Against Hasty Actions

Moscow: In a recent interview, President Vladimir Putin emphasized Russia’s state of combat readiness, asserting the nation’s full preparedness for nuclear conflict. However, he underscored that the situation does not warrant immediate escalation to such extremes.

Putin’s remarks, published on Wednesday, shed light on Russia’s stance amid rising tensions, particularly concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Despite affirming readiness for nuclear warfare, Putin emphasized a reluctance to rush into such dire circumstances.

Addressing questions on Russia’s preparedness for nuclear conflict, Putin stated, “From a military-technical point of view, we are, of course, ready.” He clarified that while readiness exists, escalation to nuclear confrontation is not imminent. Putin highlighted the understanding between Russia and the United States, particularly regarding the deployment of American troops in regions of concern to Russia.

“In the United States, there are enough specialists in the field of Russian-American relations and in the field of strategic restraint,” Putin noted. “Therefore, I don’t think that here everything is rushing to it (nuclear confrontation), but we are ready for this.”

Putin reiterated Russia’s nuclear doctrine, emphasizing the circumstances under which nuclear weapons might be employed. “Weapons exist in order to use them,” he stated, reasserting Russia’s principles.

Regarding the possibility of nuclear tests, Putin suggested reciprocity in response to actions by the United States. “It’s not necessary … we still need to think about it, but I don’t rule out that we can do the same.”

Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Putin emphasized that Russia has not found it necessary to resort to nuclear weapons. “Why do we need to use weapons of mass destruction? There has never been such a need,” he asserted.

Putin’s remarks provide insight into Russia’s stance on nuclear conflict, emphasizing readiness while advocating for restraint and diplomatic solutions.
