Mumbai: After years of anticipation, filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus, Heeramandi, has unveiled its inaugural song, ‘Sakal Ban’. The track exudes the grandeur and spectacle characteristic of Bhansali’s cinematic vision.
Renowned for his lavish sets and meticulous attention to detail, Bhansali’s signature style shines through in ‘Sakal Ban’. The song features an ensemble cast including Manisha Koirala, Richa Chadha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Sharmin Sehgal, all adorned in resplendent costumes, dancing to the melodious tune. Sung by Raja Hasan, the composition draws inspiration from traditional melodies, with lyrics credited to the 14th-century poet Amir Khusro.
Visually captivating, the color palette and aesthetics of ‘Sakal Ban’ evoke memories of Bhansali’s previous masterpiece, ‘Deewani Mastani’ from ‘Bajirao Mastani’.

Adding to the excitement, Sonakshi Sinha, who stars in Heeramandi, shared her experience of collaborating with Bhansali during a recent chat at FICCI Frames 2024. She expressed, “He has been very encouraging… We tried to work together but it didn’t work out, and we were always in touch. Every time I went to his office, we would chat over coffee.” Sinha humorously recounted her persistent request for tea instead of coffee during their meetings, which eventually led to her involvement in Heeramandi.
Heeramandi marks Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s maiden venture into the digital realm. The eight-part series is set to premiere on Netflix.
