Moscow: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed admiration for India’s External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, lauding his handling of bilateral relations between New Delhi and Moscow amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Lavrov praised Jaishankar’s assertive response to European inquiries about India’s continued oil purchases from Russia, emphasizing the importance of national dignity.
Speaking at the World Youth Forum in Sochi, Lavrov recalled an instance where Jaishankar rebuffed criticism at the United Nations by advising European leaders to focus on their own affairs. Lavrov underscored the significance of India’s oil imports from Russia, particularly in maintaining sovereignty and independence.
Lavrov’s remarks come amid European scrutiny of India’s oil procurement from Russia, with critics arguing it undermines Western sanctions against Moscow following the Ukraine invasion.
Despite international pressure, India has significantly increased its oil imports from Russia, capitalizing on discounted prices amidst geopolitical tensions. This move has solidified Russia as India’s primary oil supplier, with imports soaring from zero in January 2022 to 1.79 million barrels per day by 2023.
