Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Malaysia is open to revisiting the investigation into the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines MH370 in 2014 if compelling new evidence emerges, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced. The Malaysian government expressed willingness to resume the search for MH370, which vanished en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing, with the possibility of signing a new contract with Texas-based Ocean Infinity.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke disclosed that Ocean Infinity proposed a new search in the southern Indian Ocean, where the plane is believed to have crashed a decade ago. The company suggested another “no find, no fee” arrangement, expanding the search area based on new scientific evidence.
Loke emphasized the government’s commitment to locating MH370 and stated that Cabinet approval would be sought if credible evidence is presented. He expressed hope that the search would bring closure to the families of the victims.
The Boeing 777 disappeared from radar shortly after takeoff, sparking an extensive multinational search effort. Despite debris sightings, previous searches yielded no conclusive evidence of the aircraft’s whereabouts.
Ocean Infinity CEO Oliver Plunkett expressed confidence in the company’s enhanced search capabilities and readiness to resume the search. Loke affirmed the government’s willingness to negotiate terms with Ocean Infinity, emphasizing the priority of finding closure for the families of the victims.
The announcement brought relief and hope to family members of the victims, who have endured a decade of uncertainty. Jacquita Gomes, whose husband was on the flight, expressed gratitude for the opportunity for closure.
