India’s Electronics Manufacturing Sector Poised to Employ 4.5 Million Workers

New Delhi: S. Krishnan, Secretary of the IT Ministry, revealed that India’s electronics manufacturing sector, currently employing approximately 2 million individuals, aims to double its workforce to 4.5 million in the coming years. This ambitious goal aligns with the nation’s initiatives, including local chip manufacturing, to bolster its technological prowess.

Speaking at the ‘India Digital Summit’ (IDS) 2024 via a virtual fireside chat, Krishnan emphasized the pivotal role of semiconductor manufacturing in India’s growth trajectory. He expressed optimism about the sector’s expansion, anticipating the entry of more companies and asserting semiconductor manufacturing as a key growth area for the next decade.

“We have close to 2 million people who are employed in the electronics manufacturing sector, and we would like to go up to about 4.5 million as well,” Krishnan affirmed, underlining the sector’s potential for substantial job creation.

Discussing the digital economy’s trajectory, Krishnan, in conversation with Deepak Jacob, Group General Counsel at Dream Sports, anticipated significant growth in the coming years. This growth outlook underscores India’s evolving landscape, driven by technological innovation and digital transformation.

Addressing regulatory considerations, Krishnan emphasized the IT Ministry’s commitment to striking a balance between consumer protection and regulatory flexibility. He underscored the ministry’s meticulous approach to regulatory frameworks, prioritizing the safeguarding of user information while accommodating diverse stakeholder needs.

The two-day ‘IDS 2024’, organized by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) in collaboration with various government bodies and industry stakeholders, served as a platform to explore key trends, challenges, and opportunities shaping India’s digital ecosystem.
