Canberra: FFormer Sri Lankan cricket sensation Tillakaratne Dilshan has officially become an Australian citizen, a milestone confirmed by Australian MP Jason Wood in a recent social media announcement. Known for his dynamic batting prowess, Dilshan played a pivotal role in numerous triumphs for the Sri Lankan cricket squad throughout his illustrious career. His acquisition of Australian citizenship at the age of 47 signifies a significant chapter in his post-retirement journey from professional cricket.
“Today’s citizenship ceremony was made even more special with the attendance of Tillakaratne Dilshan, a former Sri Lankan cricketer and captain of the Sri Lanka national cricket team,” shared MP Jason Wood on social media.
The social media post further added that Dilshan is celebrated as the finest Sri Lankan player in ODI history, particularly for his expertise in run-chases. His remarkable achievements include holding the record for the highest run scorer in the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup with 500 runs and delivering a stunning century against England in the semi-final. Additionally, he played a pivotal role in the Sri Lankan squad that secured victory in the 2014 ICC World Twenty20.
MP Jason Wood warmly welcomed Dilshan as a new Australian citizen and local resident, expressing optimism about the possibility of the veteran cricketer joining a local team. He also highlighted Dilshan’s daughter Resandi, who is following in her father’s footsteps.
Tillakaratne Dilshan amassed an impressive tally of over 10,000 runs from 330 ODIs since his one-day international debut in 1999 against Zimbabwe. His Test cricket career spanned 87 matches, during which he accumulated 5492 runs, including a high-score of 193. Additionally, Dilshan made his mark in 80 T20I matches, scoring 1889 runs, which included one century and 13 half-centuries.
Renowned for his unconventional approach, including the innovative scoop shot, Dilshan emerged as an exceptionally effective and adaptable batsman across various formats throughout his cricketing journey.
