In Higashine, Yamagata, approximately 130 students and parents gathered at an elementary school on February 23 to weave together a colossal “yokozuna” rope, weighing around 300 kilograms. This rope will adorn a magnificent zelkova tree, recognized by the national government as a special natural monument.
Shoji Suzuki, aged 77 and a member of the executive committee, remarked on the challenging process, stating, “Due to the intense heat last summer, the rice was poor and the straw was short, which made it tough. I hope the children will grow up big, like a yokozuna.”
The event brought together community members in a collaborative effort to celebrate and honor their natural heritage. The symbolic act of weaving the yokozuna rope reflects a deep appreciation for nature and tradition, as well as the resilience and unity of the local community.
