New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the Quad’s role as a statement against the imposition of “veto” powers on like-minded nations’ choices, affirming its enduring presence and commitment to global prosperity. His remarks come against the backdrop of increasing concerns worldwide regarding China’s assertive actions in the Indo-Pacific region.
Addressing a think-tank forum, Jaishankar portrayed the Quad—comprising India, the US, Japan, and Australia—as an illuminating force, describing it as a dynamic, adaptable, and inclusive coalition.
The Quad’s primary focus has been on fostering cooperation to safeguard a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific in response to China’s assertiveness.
Jaishankar highlighted that the Quad symbolizes the emergence of a multipolar global order, advocating for collaborative approaches over unilateral actions. He emphasized the Quad’s distinctive characteristics, noting its departure from traditional bureaucratic norms towards a more agile and open-minded ethos.
Enumerating five key messages of the Quad, Jaishankar outlined its stance against spheres of influence, its role in democratizing global space, and its rejection of unilateralism. He underscored that the Quad represents a collective assertion that others cannot dictate the choices of member nations.
Asserting the Quad’s permanence and growth, Jaishankar called for enhancing its relevance and impact to address contemporary challenges effectively.
Participating virtually, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the Quad’s commitment to a region free from coercion and intimidation, advocating for responsible competition and adherence to international law.
Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa stressed the importance of upholding a free and open international order based on the rule of law, highlighting the Quad’s role in advancing a similar vision in the Indo-Pacific.
US Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, representing Secretary of State Antony Blinken, reiterated the Quad’s commitment to fostering a free and open Indo-Pacific, emphasizing its collaborative approach in empowering allies and partners.
Jaishankar reaffirmed the centrality of ASEAN in the Indo-Pacific, emphasizing the region’s pivotal role in shaping the strategic landscape.
