New Delhi: In a significant move, the Indian government has announced the resumption of onion exports to Bangladesh, Mauritius, Bahrain, and Bhutan, allowing a total of 54,760 tonnes until March 31, as reported by PTI.
“We have allowed export of 50,000 tonnes of onion to Bangladesh, 1,200 tonnes to Mauritius, 3,000 tonnes to Bahrain, and 560 tonnes to Bhutan with immediate effect,” stated Consumer Affairs Secretary Rohit Kumar Singh to PTI.
Traders are granted permission to export this specified quantity until March 31, with further details being finalized, Singh added. He noted that the decision followed a recommendation from the Ministry of External Affairs.
The ban on onion exports, in effect until March 31, had been put in place on December 8, 2023, aimed at stabilizing domestic supply and curbing price inflation. This move came amidst a surge in onion prices, which had doubled from Rs 40 per kg on October 25 to Rs 80 per kg on October 29 in the national capital.
