New York: Signal, the renowned encrypted messaging platform, is rolling out usernames for chats to bolster user privacy by concealing phone numbers. As part of this update, phone numbers will no longer be openly visible to all Signal users by default.
“The people who have your number saved in their phone’s contacts will still see your phone number since they already know it,” clarified the company in a statement.
Now, users can generate a distinct username to use instead (though a phone number is still required for Signal registration).
“A username isn’t the profile name visible in chats, nor is it a permanent handle, or discernible to those you’re conversing with in Signal. It’s merely a means to initiate contact without divulging your phone number,” explained the company.
Additionally, users can opt for a new, optional privacy setting.
“Without your precise unique username, individuals won’t be able to initiate a conversation or even discern the existence of your Signal account – regardless of whether they possess your phone number,” the company emphasized.
These features are presently in beta and will gradually roll out to all users in the upcoming weeks.
Upon implementation, your phone number will be concealed in Signal for any user utilizing the latest version, unless it’s already saved in their phone contacts.
“We’re also introducing a setting enabling you to manage who can discover you via your phone number on Signal,” the company added.
As of the most recent report, Signal proudly boasts an impressive user base of 40 million active users, signifying its widespread adoption and trust among individuals seeking heightened privacy and security in their communication platforms.
