New Delhi: Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis emphasized the significance of the strategic partnership between India and Greece, stating that their ties are of “particular” importance and hinting at further expansion, particularly in economic engagement. Mr. Mitsotakis made these remarks on February 21 during his two-day visit to India, marking the first visit by a Greek head of state to India in 15 years.
“For Greece, the strategic partnership between our two countries is of particular importance, and we will have the opportunity to discuss a wide range of topics including strategic partnership and fostering our economic engagement,” he shared with reporters.
Mr. Mitsotakis received a ceremonial welcome at the forecourt of the Rashtrapati Bhavan before commencing talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier in the day, he met with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who expressed delight at the prospect of enhancing India-Greece ties.
“Delighted to call on Prime Minister @kmitsotakis of Greece today. Valued his commitment to enhancing India-Greece ties. Look forward to the strengthening of our strategic partnership,” Mr. Jaishankar tweeted.
The Greek Prime Minister began his visit by paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat, underscoring the historical and cultural ties between the two nations. Notably, India-Greece relations were elevated to a ‘strategic partnership’ during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Greece in August of the previous year.
PM Mitsotakis is slated to be the chief guest and keynote speaker at the Raisina Dialogue in the national capital later in the day. The Ministry of External Affairs had earlier stated that Prime Minister Mitsotakis’ visit is expected to further strengthen and deepen the strategic partnership between India and Greece.
