Pakistan Election: Growing Pressure on Biden Administration to Probe Alleged Election Rigging in Pakistan

Pressure is mounting on the Biden administration to demand investigations into allegations of rigging in the recent Pakistani elections. A significant number of senators and congressmen have expressed serious concerns regarding the transparency of the electoral process in Pakistan.

The United States, the United Kingdom, and the European Union (EU) have all voiced apprehensions regarding the conduct of the elections in Pakistan. Following the voting on February 8, they called for a thorough investigation into reported irregularities.

Both the US and the EU highlighted complaints of interference, including the arrest of activists, emphasizing the need to address any instances of unfair practices, meddling, or fraud.

The EU specifically criticized the “lack of a level playing field” due to restrictions on certain politicians’ participation in the elections and limitations on freedom of expression, assembly, and internet usage.

The US State Department echoed concerns about undue restrictions on freedoms of expression and assembly, as well as violence and attacks targeting media personnel Democrats Ro Khanna and Ilhan Omar expressed concerns about alleged military influence on election outcomes and urged the US State Department to withhold acknowledgment of a winner until allegations of wrongdoing are thoroughly investigated.US Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.), Chair of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, issued a statement condemning the recent elections in Pakistan. He lamented that the elections were marred by actions preventing meaningful participation from all political parties and candidates.

He also condemned the deadly bombings at election campaign offices in Balochistan and called for accountability for the perpetrators. Moving forward, Cardin pledged to continue engaging on issues impacting the Pakistani people, including democracy promotion, human rights, climate change, and sustainable energy. He expressed optimism about finding opportunities for collaboration between the United States and Pakistan to advance shared goals of security, stability, and prosperity in South Asia.
