Windhoek: Namibia is in mourning as President Hage G. Geingob, a key figure in the country’s history, passed away early Sunday at the age of 82. The presidential office, through a statement attributed to Vice President Nangolo Mbumba, announced his death on social media, confirming that Mr. Geingob had been receiving treatment for cancer.
President Geingob, who assumed office in 2015, held a significant role in Namibia’s journey to independence. He served as the country’s first prime minister from 1990, the year of Namibia’s independence from South Africa, until 2002. After a decade, he returned to the role of prime minister before securing the presidency in the subsequent years.
The nation now reflects on President Geingob’s contributions to Namibia’s development and the legacy he leaves behind. Funeral arrangements and tributes are expected to follow in the coming days as the nation pays its respects to a leader who played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s post-independence era.
