5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Oklahoma City and Surrounding Areas

In a seismic event that captured the attention of Oklahoma City residents, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck late Friday night, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey. The earthquake, which occurred at 11:24 p.m., had its epicenter situated 8 kilometers (4.9 miles) northwest of Prague, Oklahoma.

Prague located approximately 57 miles (92 kilometers) east of Oklahoma City, experienced the tremors, with reports of residents in the capital city feeling the shaking. The impact of the earthquake was not confined to Oklahoma City alone, as residents in Shawnee, Stillwater, and Tecumseh also reported feeling the seismic activity, as per KFOR-TV.

First Visual of this Earthquake

The shallow depth of the earthquake, measuring just 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) deep according to the USGS, contributed to the intensity of the shaking. Shallow earthquakes tend to have a more pronounced effect on the surface.

This recent seismic event adds to the region’s history of earthquake activity. In January, at least six earthquakes, including two with a magnitude greater than 4.0, were recorded near another Oklahoma City suburb. In April, a series of six earthquakes, with one reaching a magnitude of 4.0, struck the central Oklahoma town of Carney, situated about 40 miles (64 kilometers) northeast of Oklahoma City.
