Guwahati: India’s Home Minister Amit Shah made a significant revelation during the Assam Police Commandos’ passing-out parade, declaring plans to fence the India-Myanmar border in response to escalating security issues. The announcement follows a troubling incident in Khangabok, Thoubal District, Manipur, where an irate mob targeted the 3rd Indian Reserve Battalion (3IRB), leading to a breach attempt at Thoubal Police Headquarters. Security forces responded with legal force, resulting in three BSF personnel sustaining injuries, and tragically, the loss of two state police commandos, with six others injured.
Security Advisor Kuldiep Singh, acknowledging potential involvement of Myanmar-based militants in the attack in Moreh, deviated from his earlier denial. This development raises concerns about cross-border security and necessitates stricter measures.
The decision to fence the border contrasts with India’s prior commitment to providing refuge to Myanmar refugees in Mizoram until normalcy is restored. Home Minister Amit Shah communicated this decision to Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, as detailed in an official release on Friday.
