New Delhi: French President Emmanuel Macron is set to attend the 75th Republic Day celebrations on January 26, 2024, marking his presence as the chief guest. Both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Elysee Presidential Palace have confirmed Macron’s participation.
Republic Day festivities will kick off from 10:30 AM on Kartavya Path, with this year’s parade theme centered around “India: Mother of Democracy.”
Understanding the Chief Guest Selection Process for Republic Day:
The meticulous process of selecting a chief guest for Republic Day commences six months in advance, primarily overseen by the Ministry of External Affairs. The decision hinges significantly on the state of diplomatic ties between the respective country and India.
Economic, military, political, and commercial interests play a pivotal role in the selection process before extending the invitation to the dignitary. Once the candidates are shortlisted, the list is presented to the Prime Minister of India and the President for their consideration and approval. Subsequently, the final guest is chosen and invited as the Chief Guest, the highest honor bestowed during Republic Day celebrations.
For the upcoming 2024 celebration, French President Emmanuel Macron emerges as the chosen chief guest. Beyond the positive diplomatic relations between India and France, President Macron shares a close bond with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Accompanying the French president will be a distinguished delegation including French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne, Defence Minister Sébastien Lecornu, Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, and the Chief of the Defence Staff General Thierry Burkhard.
